Walter P. Tobey papers, 1912-1926.

Letters sent by First Lt. Walter P. Tobey to his family and friends in Boston, Mass. while serving with Battery F of the 101st Field Artillery in France during World War I, 1917-19. Tobey describes sailing on board the Adriatic from New York to France; breaking his leg and subsequent stay in an army hospital; German prisoners; work setting up encampments; fighting on the front during various engagements including the 2nd Battle of the Marne; aspects of life during the war including the use of gas masks, lack of hygiene, and medical care; and observations of France while waiting to leave after the end of the war. Also includes photocopies and transcriptions of letters; Tobey's personnel file, 1912-26; and military papers including memos, orders, and payroll, 1918-19, and a copy of a test given for military advancement.
